Puto Cheese

Puto Cheese is a soft and fluffy Filipino steamed rice cake topped with rich, creamy cheese for a delightful sweet-and-savory combination. Made with flour, sugar, milk, and baking powder, these light and moist treats are easy to prepare and perfect for breakfast, merienda, or special celebrations. Best enjoyed warm, Puto Cheese pairs wonderfully with coffee, hot chocolate, or savory Filipino dishes like dinuguan.

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

1 tbsp baking powder

1 cup fresh milk

2 large eggs

2 tbsp melted butter

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese (for the batter)

1/2 cup cheddar cheese, cut into small cubes or strips (for topping)

Paper liners or lightly greased puto molds

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, and baking powder. Mix well.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth. Fold in the grated cheddar cheese.
  3. Line the puto molds with paper liners or lightly grease them. Fill each mold about ¾ full with the batter.
  4. Place a cube or strip of cheddar cheese on top of each filled mold.
  5. Arrange the molds in a preheated steamer and steam over medium heat for 12–15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Remove the puto from the steamer and let them cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your soft and fluffy Puto Cheese warm with coffee, tea, or hot chocolate!
